Datong yak is the first artificial cultivated yak breed, which was cultivated by Lanzhou Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary of CAAS and Datong yak breeding farm using 25 years, and through four generations intensive selection and elimination. The new breed of Datong yak with strong heterosis of 1/2 wild yak blood, and have perfect characteristics such as good resistance, high performance on meat production and reproduction, as well as highly consistent of body type and coat hair color, and genetic stability. The hair production and meat production traits of Datong yak increased by 19% and 20% than other yak breeds of the same ages, at the same time, the pregnancy rate of youth Datong yak is up to 70 to 80 percent, increased by15 to 20 percent than other yak breeds The artificial insemination, embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization are used in yak breeding system. These achievements made Datong yak get the second Award for Nation Science Development in 2008. What’s more, the internet database system and genetic resources sharing platform have been established to share the yak resources and breeding techniques with the whole community.
The Datong Yak and integrated cultivation systems created the new breeding method and filled the blank in the history of the world’s domesticated animal breeding. The first wild yak experimental station was established to study and solve a series of technical problems such as semen collection and frozen semen production under high elevation of 4000m above in alpine pastoral areas, which improved the scientific and technological content of yak livestock industry. These techniques provide technical support for yak improvement and degradation prevention and have been widely applied in yak producing areas. Nearly 9654 heads of breeding yaks are sold in recent three years and 270 000 branches of semen are produced. About 300,000 heads of yak covering 75% of production areas are improved every year, which plays an important role in promoting the economic development of minorities in Tibetan areas.
