Lanzhou Institute of Husbandry and Pharmaceutical Sciences of CAAS was established in 1958. 1978 saw the establishment of Lanzhou Institute of Animal Science. In 1997 these two institutes merged into one institute, Lanzhou Institute of Husbandry and Pharmaceutical Sciences of CAAS (LIHPS, CAAS), which is a national level organization which focuses on grassland management, animal science, traditional veterinary medicine and veterinary pharmaceutics. There are 4 research departments including Department of Animal Science, Department of Veterinary & Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pharmaceutics and Department of Prataculture and Fodder. The LIHPS focuses on major scientific problems in livestock production in China and four subject areas, including farming, veterinary medicine, Chinese veterinarian and prataculture. It mainly conducts applied basic research and applied research on breeding and reproduction of special herbivores, veterinary medicine, Chinese veterinarian, grassland and lawn.
Based on the development of western regions combined with national situation, the institute regarded promoting scientific and technological development of Chinese husbandry as responsibility. And we have done much work on the development of animal science and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in China.
Since 1958 to Oct. 2013, the LIHPS has undertaken 1100 scientific research projects and won 205 awards, including 13 national awards, and 118 provincial awards. It also has obtained 37 patents, 57 new certificates of veterinary medicine, 4 new varieties and 5 new national certificates of veterinary medicine. It has published more than 5100 papers and compiled 174 works.
There were two projects won national awards 2007 and 2009,which were “Datong yak” and “Quinocetone”.It has developed a new variety of yak with independent intellectual property rights, “Datong yak”, filling the gap in the history of yak breeding in the world. Quinocetone is our self-developed antibiotic growth-promoting feed additives,it obvious role in promoting the growth of livestock, feed conversion rate, variety of intestinal bacteria have a strong inhibition, It also can significantly reduce the incidence of diarrhea livestock.
Now LIHPS has a working staff of 203, including 1 expert with outstanding contribution of the Ministry of Agriculture, 2 excellent experts of Gansu province, 4 “555” talents of Gansu province, 3 leading talents of Gansu province. It is attached by Veterinary Toxicology Special Committee of Chinese Society of Toxicology, Northwest Pathology Branch of Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Northwest Chinese Veterinary Medicine Branch and National Yak Breeding Cooperative Group.
The LIHPS is located in downtown of Lanzhou city, with an area of 95 mu and 365 hectares of field test base. It has a 17,000 m2 of scientific research building, a 6,000 m2 of scientific and technological training center, 2,000 m2 of Chinese veterinary medicine GMP plant and 1,230 m2 of SPF standardized test animal shed. It has built 15 scientific research platforms: Quality Supervision, Inspection and Test Center for Animal Fur and Products of the Ministry of Agriculture (Lanzhou), Lanzhou Key Field Scientific Observation and Test Station of Ecological Environment of Loess Plateau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Key Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine Development of the Ministry of Agriculture, National Laboratory of Disease Control of Dairy Industry and Technology System, Lanzhou Research Center for Risk Assessment on Quality Safety of Animal Products of CAAS, Pilot Plant of Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine of CAAS (GMP Plant of Chinese Veterinary Medicine), Lanzhou Field Scientific Observation and Test Station of Ecological Environment of Loess Plateau of CAAS, Lanzhou Field Scientific Observation and Test Station of Agricultural Environment of Loess Plateau of CAAS, Zhangye Field Scientific Observation and Test Station of Pasture and Eco-agriculture of CAAS, Research Center for Clinic Veterinary Medicine of CAAS, Laboratory of New Veterinary Medicine Engineering of CAAS, Gansu Key Laboratory of New Veterinary Medicine Engineering, Gansu Research Center for Chinese Veterinary Medicine Engineering, Gansu Key Laboratory of Yak Breeding Engineering, and SPF-level standardized Test Animal Shed.
These platforms have become the basic methods and important support of scientific researches in the institute and served as an important platform for scientific tests and researches as well as promotion of scientific and technological achievements. Two national journals, entitled “Chinese Herbivores” and “Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine” are edited and published by LIHPS.
The institute is subordinate to Chinese Veterinary Toxicology Society, Northwestern Pathology Branch of Veterinary Medicine Society, Northwestern Chinese Traditional Veterinary Medicine Branch of China Animal Science &Veterinary Society, Chinese Cooperative Group of Yak Breeding. The institute actively participates in international cooperation and exchange. We have carried on long term science and technology cooperation and communication with UK, France, USA, Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Germany, Holland and many other countries. We have organized the “International Training Workshop on Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine for developing countries” for 6 times science 2005,and also organized “The 1st International Conference on Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine” 2010.
